Not Before Coffee

Love Dare Day 3: March 19, 2020

What is Day 3 about:

Day three in “The Love Dare” was all about selfishness, no not coffee.

What do I think about the material:

This chapter is very well written. It is so often difficult to talk to myself and others about selfishness without sounding harsh or judgmental. This chapter does a great job at making it a fact that we are all selfish by nature and we must fight to be unselfish.

The chapter puts it pretty black and white by stating that all the decisions we make in life have to benefit someone. If at the heart of an act we are working to benefit ourselves over others, then the intent was selfishness, but if our motive is others, then success.

I truly believe this. I read in “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” by Dale Carnegie, that because of our human nature, quite often at the heart of charity we find a selfish desire.

Yes, even the greatest philanthropists struggle with selfish desires.

This chapter listed 4 questions I would like to repeat here. These questions are great to ask ourselves if we find selfishness difficult to face:

  • Do I truly want what’s best for my husband or wife?
  • Do I want them to feel loved by me?
  • Do they believe I have their best interests in mind?
  • Do they see me as looking out for myself first, or them first?

I think these are excellent questions to ask ourselves as we battle this internal struggle every single day.

What was my task and how did I perform the task:

I mentioned in yesterday’s blog that we went shopping for supplies so we wouldn’t have to go out and shop again, well today’s challenge was to purchase a small gift for my love just to say I was thinking of her. So much for planning ahead of time.

I told Jess that I needed to go out and pick up a water hose. That wasn’t false, I meant to pick one up yesterday so we can keep the chicken poop off our walkways. We have a store here in Pullman called Pullman Building Supply. They carry, obviously, building supply materials, but also have some fun little home trinkets.

I found a bunch of things that she would love, but I wanted to keep the purchase budget friendly so the gift wouldn’t increase the stress on Jess and our budget. I found a few cute coffee mugs. We are daily coffee drinkers so I thought it was a good gift.

What was Jessica’s reaction:

She wasn’t surprised.

If you remember in the intro of day 1, I mentioned that this is not the first time I’ve read the book, so she knew it was coming. Also, I don’t think my ruse was clever. Regardless, she said she liked the gift and made a little joke about the saying on the mug.

The purpose of the task was to show her that I love her and express it through a little gift. I will mark this one down as success.
