Love Dare Day 29: April 18, 2020
Yesterday we had a bit of a sewer disaster that is challenging my patience, but I am working hard to stay motivated.
What is Day 29 about:
You will not accomplish anything in your life unless you are motivated to make it happen. Sometimes we don’t realize we are motivated because it comes so naturally, but something drives you. Hunger drives you to eat just like fatigue drives you to sleep.
But what motivates us to love?
This chapter explores the root of what motivates us to love imperfect human beings.
What do I think about the material:
This might be my favorite chapter of The Love Dare, unless I’ve already said that once before. As you may know, Jess and I both are entrepreneurs and running your own businesses absolutely require us to stay motivated.
On top of that, we have 4 kids and a very blended family. Whether it’s dealing with co-parenting with another couple or new Down syndrome challenges, we must stay focused to overcome obstacles. Jess and I make sure we follow the advice of this chapter.
If you are anything like me, sometimes the reasons we try to motivate ourselves fall short. For example, before I left SEL, I would have a task that I really didn’t want to do. I would tell myself that I am doing this particular task to be a good employee. However, sometimes if I didn’t do a good job I would still be rewarded. The next time, that motivation would fail me.
This chapter points out that our motivations, because we are human, must not be earthly. The only pure form of motivation can come from God. If you are looking for biblical examples, I recommend checking out Colossians chapter 3. It basically says all that we do must be to please God.
Yes, this means pleasing your spouse cannot be the motivation for your love. He or she may benefit from your endeavors, but it must not be the driving factor. In our relationships, our love must be driven by the desire to please God.
But guess what? We are off the hook of being self-motivated. If we fall short, God is always there to help us pick it back up again. Have you ever had an accountability partner? Have they ever let you down? I hope not, but I know I am not a perfect accountability partner.
Bottom line, God is a stable source of motivation that never changes. So in our life if we want security in purpose, we only have to look up.
My task and how did I perform the task:
Today’s challenge is to pray for your spouse, say, “I love you,” and express love to them in some tangible way. It also says that in your prayer to specifically pray for them by name and thank God for giving us the privilege of loving them.
The prayer and words were easy for me, but the tangible way became a problem when our sewer system decided to fight back. In the midst of the chaos, I could ask her to not do her artist’s date, but I thought it was a good way to show her my love. I handled the chaos and made sure it didn’t affect her date.
Jessica’s reaction:
She didn’t know I did anything particular. Well, at least she didn’t express it. But I know her artist’s dates are very important to her in keeping her motivated in her life.
