What is the resistance
If you are a fan of Star Wars I apologize, the Resistance I refer to is not the fight against the Empire, but a different battle altogether. Last year when my journey as as writer really began, I read a book called, The War of Art, by Steven Pressfield. This is not a complicated read and I highly recommend it to any struggling artist.
When I say struggling, I don’t mean someone who is practicing their art every day and trying to make a living. What I mean is someone who wakes up and does NOT practice their art because of any number of reasons. The book puts a name to that internal battle that we face when approaching our dreams.
Steven calls it the ‘Resistance’ and I appreciate the name. He says that we win when we fight the resistance. We win because we defeated the urge to not pursue our passion in one day at a time. The funny thing about the war is that it is never over. He is a very successful writer, but to the date he wrote this book, he still fights the Resistance.
Why I fight
I believe we were all created to create. It looks different for everyone on this planet even if we share the same medium. But we were put here on this earth to cultivate this creation and make it better one day at a time. If you are a painter and you inspire one other person to be better or you uplift their spirits, then you have done your job.
With this blog, I don’t know who reads it. I am sure there are metrics I can look for, but my purpose is to help others. If one person reads anything I put out there and it helps their life, then I have accomplished my task. From a selfish perspective, it feels good to practice my craft.
Jess once told me that my mood of the day is dramatically different on days that I didn’t write. She can tell within minutes if I didn’t create before trying to handle my day.
So why do I fight?
I fight the Resistance because that is my purpose in life. If you find creativity in making Excel spreadsheets and tracking equipment performance, then do it. Don’t do it simply because it’s your job, but do it because that is what fulfills your soul.
How I fight
One word at a time.
Seriously, that is it. My gift and passion is in writing. If I sit down and am able to write a blog on how to improve your social media presence then I won. No, that is not what I want to write about, but that day I fought and I won the battle. I picked up my sword and slayed the preverbal dragon that is my enemy.
Will people read it? Maybe. Will it change people’s lives? Probably not, but what if it does? The bottom line is that my output is not the purpose of the battle. My output is there for God and the world to do what they want with it. My job is done. I wrote.
Some days, I will be honest, I don’t win. Those battles are the battles that I look back on and use as encouragement to know that I am not perfect, but I continue to fight.
I must ask….
What battle are you refusing to fight and how can I help?
