Darkness May be Here, But it Doesn’t Consume

Besides the physics behind why darkness only happens at night, have you ever wondered why the night is only temporary and there is always a dawn? Our favorite time of the year is Summer. No surprise, but mostly because we can hang out on our porch until nearly 10 pm.

At night we rest and the darkness allows us to rest a little better than during the day. My heart goes out to those who live in the far Northern and Southern reaches of Earth. It can’t be easy to endure longer periods of night and day. For a period of time, I worked the graveyard shift and that about drove me nuts. Some nights seemed to last forever and the days didn’t always bring rest.

Darkness has its purpose and so does the light

Darkness has a purpose, but let’s take a step out of the physical world and jump right into the metaphorical. We often associate dark times in our life with pain and suffering. Our current social situation is no exception. There is so much hate and greed going around, that it can be hard to see the purpose in the darkness. I would like to use myself as an example. An example of how darkness has a purpose and ultimately brings us to light.

Almost exactly one month after my oldest daughter was born, my money struggles became more than I could handle. Growing up a Christian man, I believed in tithing 10% of my income to the church. For the past six weeks, however, we hadn’t been attending church. Lack of sleep and severe post-pardon depression by her mother gave me an excuse. I had about 6 weeks worth of tithes sitting in an envelope.

In the mean time, I worked 2 jobs and slept about 3-4 hours a night. Since her mother was struggling so much, I handled the night feedings and such. One Friday I promised I would try to find some day-labor work at a local hardware store the next morning. That night had been particularly rough so I accidentally slept through my alarm.

She did not hear any excuses. The next day she resorted to violent outbursts that put me in the ICU for a couple of days. Someday, I will write the details of that day, but that is for later. Bottom line is that the darkness that swallowed my life for the next decade had its purpose.

Setting your mind right

As much as I want to blame her 100% for that day, I look back and know that my own mind wasn’t right. I was always short to temper. When I failed at something I was quick to lie and blame the circumstances over taking my own responsibility. One fateful day in Japan, however, the darkness began to lift.

What happened next was incredibly important to the rest of my life. What the darkness taught me is that I had work to do. The circumstances surrounding my life was a result of choices. Choices that I made and not the result of the world around me. Do you believe in Cause and Effect? After rehearsing those years, I realized that notion is larger than I can explain to you.

As I spoke about in an earlier post, our minds are phenomenal assets that we must have screwed on properly. At the end of my dark period, I resolved that any situation that comes my way I will first set it straight in my mind before moving forward. The darkness taught me that, not the light.
