Mistakes! Get Your Mistakes Here! They’re Free!

I feel like the boy from an old film selling newspapers on the corner, but today, I am giving away mistakes for free! Yes, you heard it right, Free! I may be getting old, but I think my memory is still going strong. That being said, I can’t remember the last day where I didn’t make some sort of mistake.

Whether it is yelling at my kids, forgetting to complete a promised project, or turning the sprinklers at night to water our garden, I make mistakes every day of my life. What I am learning, however, is how to properly respond to those mistakes. As you know from my dumb-ass post, I am still working on my self-talk.

We all make mistakes

In the early days of co-parenting, I found myself constantly frustrated with our son because he had this expectation of being perfect. He was taught that the only way to live life is to strive for perfection. First of all, what a terrible lesson to teach a toddler, but to some degree I have to agree with the concept. Well at least half of it.

Accepting the fact that we make mistakes and not attempting to improve on those mistakes, in my mind, is absolutely unacceptable. As men of God, we must understand our infallibility, but also make attempts to improve every day. No, I am not expecting leaps and bounds, but do something with our mistakes instead of letting the lesson go unlearned.

When I yell at my kids, I always make sure I sit them down to apologize and explain the situation. Most, if not all, times I am in the wrong for raising my voice and I must apologize for my behavior. But the real question is what did I learn from the interaction? If I can’t come back with a lesson, then the mistake was in vain. Last night I didn’t water my garden. My solution, because I know I will forget again, is to get an automatic timer to water for me.

Solutions should define us

I want to preface this section by 2 mottos that I live by:
– There is a solution to every problem.
– There is no such thing as a perfect solution.

When we make mistakes, the most important thing we can do is learn from those mistakes. Reference the feature photo of this blog. I will no longer allow my family to put a Starbucks coffee cup on the top shelf of the fridge. That lesson, however, doesn’t always lead you to a perfect solution, nor does it guarantee a mistake will never occur. As a matter of fact, I can pretty much guarantee you will not be immune from further mistakes.

But that is not the point. The mistakes, or the solutions, are not what define us. What defines us is our ability to seek the solutions or lessons gathered from our mistakes. So embrace your imperfection and be prepared with an open mind to look for those answers. Like I said, I am in no way immune from mistakes, so send me a message and we can share our mistakes, solutions and lessons together.
