Often when I think of Hebrews, chapter 7 is what comes to my mind. Jewish leaders expected perfection to be saved, but we learn that it is not possible. While I am not Jewish, often times my faith makes me want to be perfect by the Law, and I forget the grace that God has offered for our salvation.
To make matters worse, I often project this need for perfection on my fellow followers of Christ. Not only is that not fair, but it is completely contrary to how God wants us to treat our fellow man. Hebrews 7 is a great reminder of our freedom from the law and our salvation through hope.
Is perfection achievable?
Yes, I know that is an obvious answer. No, not a single human being can live a perfect life, then why do we try to achieve perfection? In my own life I am not a big fan of failure. But in order to understand what failure is, we have to set a bar of expectation to evaluate our level of success. Often times, I set that bar to perfection and expect that I can achieve that goal.
The truth of the matter is that no matter how hard I try, I will never reach perfection. I can work until I am dead to the world and be as vulnerable to my loved ones as possible, but at the end of the day, I will fail. Our perspective on our accomplishments should not be based on our ability to reach that level, but on the perfection of our heart.
Real life application
That last statement may sound like I am contradicting myself, but think about it this way. Our faith and hope lie in the grace and salvation of God. We are given a promise by God that if we have faith in Him, our souls will be perfected in Heaven. We are not promised a perfect life on earth. As a matter of fact, we are promised the opposite of a perfect life.
That being said, we are promised perfection on the other side of this life. Therefore, we can achieve perfection of hope that by our faith we will be with God. So instead of focusing on our actions and trying to live by every letter of the law, we should focus on perfecting our hope. In perfect hope comes salvation and we let go of the stress of failure.
