Word to the Wise – Guard Your Word

Ever been in a conversation with someone and said to yourself, “I don’t believe a single word this person is saying to me right now.” I sure have. What about when you are talking to a complete stranger? There is an innate gift inside of us to see through people’s BS, but why do we spin it like we are crafting a masterpiece.

Today, I realized that fear of failure or rejection often causes us to lose sight of our true value and the words that come out of our mouth end up betraying us. We find ourselves standing there before someone with good intentions as the wrong word spills out cascading to more words that betray who we are.

Who really cares about our word?

A friend of mine told me today that it seems like it is getting more and more important to ensure our words display who we are. As technology gets more advanced and every word you say or write is documented forever, the things we say define us even more so. Gone are the days of saying something stupid and no one hearing us.

Whether or not you know it, every word you say is like a brick adding to your building that people see when they encounter you. Sometimes those bricks are not the strongest or the purest and must be removed and replaced with a word of truth. Too many bad bricks and the whole building will come crumbling down.

How to change other’s perception

To begin with, we must speak to our truth. We must keep a diligent effort to ensure that every word that comes out of our mouth or shoved into the digital space is true to who we are. If we don’t believe in a particular movement, then don’t say you do. Is there a controversy spewing on Facebook that we want to contribute to? Make sure you contribute with honesty and not what the popular opinion is.

Secondly, as we ensure our truth comes out each day, we must look at what we’ve said in the past and remove the bad bricks. Is there a conversation you remember that you may have told a little white lie? Well, it is time to correct that mistake. Chances are you will not only remove a bad brick, but will elevate your word to the person you reconcile with.
