Today, we embark on the complex journey of Proverbs. King Solomon wastes no time and jumps right into the importance of seeking wisdom. Proverbs, as we will learn, is very organized. He typically starts with a statement and then elaborates. Some of the proverbs are explained at great lengths while others may only be the statement itself.
He begins the book by explaining the purpose of the book of Proverbs. Verses 1-6 tells us that the book was written to encourage men to become wise and seek wise counsel. In chapter 1, he tackles 4 different proverbs. The first three are about fearing the Lord, hearing the instruction of our parents, and warning us not to be enticed by sinners. But the fourth is where I would like to focus today: Wisdom.
Wisdom is the opposite of fear
It is a day I will likely not forget. I took my Spring Break of my Freshman year at Texas Tech to go with a friend to Albuquerque, New Mexico for a skiing trip. I had never been skiing, but I didn’t let my pride get in the way. Hours later I found myself at the top of a black run getting ready to go down the steep slope. I was scared to death.
I didn’t think I would die, but I didn’t know what would happen. It was the lack of knowledge that made me fearful. If I had sought wisdom before attempting the black run, then the fear would’t be there. That is the point Solomon is making in the end of this chapter. If we don’t seek wisdom before we act, then wisdom will mock us as we fail. Sounds a little mean, but that is the nature of wisdom.
Real life application
You may have heard of paralysis by analysis, and that is not what I am talking about here. I am talking about seeking wisdom before acting. The Bible makes it clear that our human nature is not good. So if we are only relying on our own experiences then we are missing out on the opportunity to have wisdom before we start. Before you leap, seek wisdom from God and the wise people he as put in your life.
