When you walk a path, whether it is a real path or metaphorical one, what keeps you on track? Is it obvious railings and markers or something more internal? In our recent trip to Yellowstone National Park we had obvious markers to keep us safe as we walked the geyser basins. But in our every day life, these markers are not that obvious.
King Solomon quickly addresses this, of course with a complimented promise, in the first two verses of Proverbs chapter 3. In our pursuit of wisdom, he reminds us not to forget the Laws of God and to keep his commandments in our heart. He reminds us that if we do this then we will have added peace and life. Who couldn’t use more of that?
Where are the path markers in our life?
In principle that sounds great, but where are we supposed to find these laws and commandments. Unless you have a time machine the rest of us are not aware of, most of us don’t live the traditional Jewish life along with all of its customs and traditions. To answer the subhead question, the answer can still be found in the same book.
When searching for answers in our life, we don’t like to waste time and we prefer to find the solution quickly. Well, there is hope. You don’t need to read all 66 books of the Bible to get you started. I recommend you start in Acts.
Real life application
Why Acts? Well, plain and simply, Acts was written when the audience of the new Gospel more represented the people we are today. Paul brought the Word of God to nations that not only didn’t believe in the one true God, but also didn’t have the history of traditions like the Jewish culture. Like us, they were a clean slate. So start today. Pick up your Bible and read the first chapter. Then tomorrow, read it again. Try to put yourself in that time period and ask God to show you something new.
