Fruits are often a symbol of productivity in the Bible. Solomon carries that metaphor in chapter 3 when he mentions another promise. But before we mention the promise, we first must talk about our commitment to receive the promise. In verse 7, Solomon says we are not to be wise in our own eyes. Instead, we are to fear the Lord and depart from evil. Why does he assume that being wise in our own eyes will drive us towards evil?
Try an exercise for me. Find a group photo that contains you and your spouse. Tell her to close her eyes then look at the photo. Give her a few seconds then ask where her eyes first went. Almost 100% of the time, people will first look for themselves in a photo. Why? The simple fact is our human nature is selfish and ego driven. I am not saying she meant anything bad about finding herself first, but it is our nature to do so.
How do I get the fruits if I’m evil?
First of all, it is because of our nature that we must constantly seek devotion with God and read his word daily. Solomon is saying that because of our very nature, we can’t trust our own wisdom. Think about that for a second. Does the phrase self-preservation come to mind? God’s love teaches us to be selfless and love others like we love ourselves.
Solomon is saying in this section that we must turn from our own instinctual wisdom and seek the wisdom of God. It is only then that we will be able to reap the first fruits of our harvest. I certainly want the promises of God in my life, so how do I actually make this happen on a daily basis?
Real life application
I have said it many times before, so I won’t hold back now. We must take each step towards wisdom one at a time. Don’t think for a minute that you will be perfect in every decision, but making that effort will mean the difference between tasting those fruits or watching them rot away.
With every decision you need to make, ask yourself if that is wise according to God’s plan. Were you in charge of dinner tonight and you served your plate first? What do you do if there isn’t quite enough for everyone? How about when you sit down ready to indulge and your spouse asks you for something? Do you get irritated or are you thankful that you can help? No sir, this is not an easy challenge. But trust me, the taste of the fruit is so worth it.
