Cleaning My Mind on a Daily Basis

09.04.2020 Jonathan Biles Personal Blog Cleaning

We live down a gravel road now for six years. Our car quickly gets dirty and requires a daily cleaning. Now, I’m not going to lie, we don’t clean the thing every day and as a result, we’ve had to repair our back window 3 times! Yes, it may sound absurd, but the dirt gets in the window mechanisms and jams the regulator. After the third repair I begged the mechanic for a solution and all he could offer was a daily hosing.

He didn’t recommend we break out the soap bucket and give it a thorough wash down, but simply rinse off the dirt we collected that day on our trips up and down our driveway. It got me thinking about how our minds get a little dirty every day. I sat down for a minute and realized that even though I try to read the Bible each day and work on my self-improvement, I am not actively cleaning the dirt off of my mind.

Cleaning doesn’t have to be hard

I must admit, when I get into something I try to do it to the best of my ability. Most of the time this means I put in way too much effort that is actually required. For example, I recently started to write a short-story fiction series called Jimmy’s Adventures. This idea came about because besides blogging, I wanted a way to practice writing each day to get better. I am 4 episodes in and the feedback I receive is great.

But I can’t help from my mind going crazy with the places I can take these adventures. I told myself that what if I wrote every day for 100 days, then I would have 100 adventures that I can change into a children’s story series and sell it. But wait, that was not the purpose of this writing. This is important because it changes my approach each day. I sit and instead of writing to practice, I write for perfection in order to publish. Relax Jon, it doesn’t have to be that difficult! Either does cleaning our mind.

Baby-steps lead to great results

Whether you think it or not, unless you live in a complete isolated zone, our minds will get dirty each day. So cleaning our mind daily is incredibly important. But if we take the Jon approach, it quickly becomes a task and not a cleansing process. I recommend you take the following approach instead.

Each morning when you wake for the day and put your feet on the floor, thank God for his grace and mercy, then immediately ask for cleansing of your mind and forgiveness. Then, continue your day with a renewed mind. No, this is not some magical prayer, but it is a start in the direction of protecting our mind from complete breakdown resulting in a required overhaul.
