Pokemon Go is Still a Thing

This morning in a weekly men’s Bible-study zoom, I made a potentially embarrassing revelation. Two days ago, I downloaded Pokemon Go. I know, a little late to the game, but surprisingly it is still very popular. Truth be told, on July 8, 2016, I downloaded the game to see what all the hype was about. It lasted about a week before I deleted the app.

A surprise came with my pokemon experience

So the question I feel I need to answer is why would a 42-year-old writer and entrepreneur download a game designed to grab your attention and never let go? Seriously, there are countless opportunities in this game to swipe left, swipe right, and tap like it’s going out of style. Well, I can actually blame this decision on my wife. Correction, she gets all of the credit.

Let me explain.

While Evan is not our oldest child, he is the first in which we get to experience all the joy associated with our kids turning into teenagers. One of the first changes Jess and I realized we must make is that we need to find better ways to connect with him. Long gone are the days where he wants to sit with us on the couch or play silly games. Now, he is more sophisticated and want us to connect to him on his level.

Connection is key and stress relief is a great by-product

I am proud to report that our decision to give into this game is paying off. Last night we played around the house, walking in circles to gain gifts and sought Evan’s expertise on the game. This morning he came downstairs and said, “last night was so much fun!” A very proud moment of bonding with him and I hope we continue down this path.

Being in this pandemic may increase mental stress as we lose the normal social interactions that we have, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. We must find better and more relevant ways to connect with one another, even if it is over a silly game. One more note, playing this game has actually reduced the amount of time I waste on Facebook or my news app. Removing that negativity from my everyday life has definitely reduced my stress. See, a win for all.
