Deny Your Biology and Immediately Regret It

That last chapter on the true purpose of your why was pretty heavy. Sorry, the next chapter doesn’t let us off easy. We need not deny our gut! Raise your hand if you’ve ever been in a situation that you felt uneasy about? Then, after getting yourself out of there, hindsight proves you right? Well that is no coincidence.

The more science learns about our biology, the more they discover that there is no way to deny the fact that our body works as a team with our brain and gives us signals to protect our very being. This concept does not end with our safety, but also with our purchases and trusts that we have with others.

Deny your biology and you will regret it

Sinek does a great job of getting into the science of how our brain processes our gut instincts, so I will not get into the details of it all in this post, but I highly recommend reading this chapter twice. The most interesting part of it all is that we have a tendency to listen to these impulses even when we don’t mean to.

Sinek explains that when we buy products that do not appeal to our why we regret those purchase and we will deny ourselves those impulses in the future. He says that great leaders often don’t even talk about what they are trying to accomplish, but they get people to buy into why they are so passionate and this is why they are so successful.

Real life application

That all sounds good, but what does this mean in my daily life? If you do not have aspirations to be a great leader or run a must-million dollar company, I completely understand, but don’t let the lessons of this book go unused. Whether you know it or not, trusting your gut has two profound affects on your life.

First, even if you don’t want to, at some point you will interact with other human beings who don’t deny their gut, but act accordingly. In those situations, if you have not clearly believed and illustrated your why, then those people will not give you the time of the day. Secondly, ignoring that gut feeling will only lead to heartbreak. Whether it was your last ebook you purchased or the new vehicle sitting in your driveway, you will never truly be happy with purchases that deny the gut feeling. Start to listen and act when you have these feelings. After all, you don’t ignore the feeling of hunger now do you?
