Dream the Impossible Dream; You May Be Wrong

5.28.2020 Jonathan Biles Blog Impossible

Both Jess and I are dreamers, but often, the impossible dreams we brush off as outlandish or simply too big to achieve. However, what if it’s not impossible? 17-year old Jonathan would look at my life today and think that it is impossible to get where I am.

It is not that my life is crazy luxurious or that we have millions sitting in our bank, but that I am satisfied with my life. When I was a teenager, I had this angst that nothing in this world could bring me satisfaction and the only way I could achieve happiness is to be in constant pursuit of the next adventure.

Boy was I wrong. Not only has the impossible come true, but I got here with the help of my loved ones and the big guy in the sky. I must admit, getting to this point in my life would have been impossible alone, because my limitations make it not achievable.

Impossible by our standards

I recently read in Genesis that when Jacob (Israel) lost Joseph that he thought it impossible to ever see him again. Yes, he was told that an animal killed him, but Jacob had literally heard the voice of God. I always assumed that the men of the Bible would have more faith than to think that things were impossible.

Funny thing though, they were human too. Late in Genesis Jacob gets to see Joseph again and he comments that he thought seeing his son again was beyond impossible. But the events that led up to him seeing Joseph again was crafted by God. In a sense, Jacob was right. By all human ability, it was impossible for them to have a family reunion.

How to start chasing that dream

What are we supposed to do then? If we dream the impossible dream, but can’t achieve it on our own then how are we supposed to proceed. Sadly for my teen self, I didn’t learn this until much later, but reaching impossibility is actually pretty easy. If you are trying to save a lost marriage, or publish a novel, or get that dream job, there are 2 easy actions to keep in mind each day.

  1. Give it to God daily, but don’t forget it. If you do not believe in a higher power then I suggest you open your mind to the possibility that there is an ultimate creator and you have someone in your corner whether you know it or not.
  2. Take 1 small step every day towards that goal and do not judge your step. If you want to run a marathon, today put on your running shoes. Tomorrow put on your running shoes and walk to the kitchen. Each day take a tiny step and they will compound to the 26 mile goal.
