Equations Work When Both Sides Are Equal

Our twelve-year-old really got into equations in math this year. The hardest concept for him to learn is that both sides must stay equal. Do you remember algebra equations? If you add one number to one side of the equals sign, you must add it to the other.

While this seems like a simple task on the chalkboard, often in this world we live in, making both sides equal is incredibly hard. This past week there has been some massive social injustices that make me think we have made no progress in loving each other better. Hate me for what I am about to say, but we are all guilty of this problem.

I was raised in a loving home with two parents that charged us children with the task of loving others no matter what. I will be the first to admit, this is challenging most days. It is very challenging to see the injustices of the world and love those that create the chaos.

Equations simply must be balanced

The only way we are going to improve as a society is continue to balance each side of the equation. But here is the kicker. In math, if you add to one side, you add to the other. Let’s say one side of the equation is good and the other side is evil. If we add to the evil in society then we must add to the good in society.

Tired of doing good? Then we must do something to eliminate the bad. I am not going to lie, this is a challenging principle to live by.

How to balance the good and bad

For myself, I start with my family. By no stretch of the imagination am I a perfect father. I lose my temper and yell at the kids at least several times a week. Sometimes I fail as a husband and don’t meet my wife’s every need. What I do my best to accomplish, however, is to balance those situations.

When one of my kids are being a royal pain in the butt and I lose my temper, I always make sure I come back and apologize and give them the opportunity to express their feelings about the situation. This has taken years of practice to make a habit and I continue to work on it every single day.

The biggest place that I need to grow in balancing the equation is in the larger society. I don’t do a great job at seeing injustices and reacting to them properly. Often times I prefer to metaphorically scroll by and let the world figure out its own mess.

How about you?

Is there any way that can help you overcome the challenge to adding hate to the evil side of the equation when some horrible injustice occurs? I would love to collaborate with you. Just send me a message and we can connect.
