Guard Your Ever-So Weary Mind

It is hard not to do. I don’t want to open the news app and read what is going on. I want to guard my mind, but I need to know what is going on. The chaos in our country creates anxiety with every story I read. As a result, if I am not careful, it can completely derail my day.

Before I begin, I want to be clear on one point. No, my life is not at risk or is my situation dire like those in the news. I don’t suffer from racism or violent threats against my family. However, what I do suffer from I believe is at the heart of most of the problems with society.

What’s the problem?

I am reading a few books for personal development and ironically right now they are all discussing the power of our mind. They have different messages, but bottom line, any change or improvement we want to make must start with the mind.

You have probably heard it before as there have been many books written on the subject, but the way we think shapes our behaviors, habits, and subconscious as well as purposeful decisions. But simply forcing yourself to think happy thoughts is not where it begins. It must first start with your input.

Have you ever heard of the saying, “Garbage in, Garbage out?” This phrase was coined by an IBM programmer George Fuechsel. He used this phrase to instruct programmers that you can’t get quality programming from crappy inputs. This is the same way our mind works. If I wake up every morning reading the negativity in the news, guess where my mind wants to go.

How can I guard better?

We need to take this seriously. We need to take the Navy Seal level guard approach. Our society is full of negativity, hate, and sexuality. It permeates every part of our day, so we must stay vigilant with our thoughts. I don’t think it is possible to completely avoid all inputs, but when those inputs try to force themselves into our receivers, we must shut them down.

If we see something that doesn’t improve our minds, or if we have a garbage in thought, first and foremost we need to eliminate the shame of that thought. Shame will only bring in more bad thoughts. A trick I like to use is to counter the thought.

Bad thought: “This world seems to be only getting more and more violent.”
Good thought: “During this chaotic time, there are people spreading love.”

Both statements are true, but if we focus on the good, then we can shift our mind and habits to the good. Do you have trouble keeping positive thoughts prevalent in your mind? I would love to help you out. Just send me a message and we can connect.
