I am posting each day on one chapter or topic I read in my daily Bible reading. I will start this series in Hebrews, because why not. Check out this quick video on Hebrews from The Bible Project to help us start.
The video does a great job at explaining the outline and purpose of Hebrews. Therefore, I will not go into the history or details of the book, and just jump right into chapter 1.
What Hebrews chapter 1 says to me
One of the reasons I enjoy reading Hebrews is the challenge of understanding the message behind the book. We are not 100% sure who the author is or who the audience is. Like just about everything I have read in the Bible, I like to think I am the audience.
With Hebrews, however, I think the message is directly to people who have access to both the Old and New Testaments. As we continue through this book, we constantly see comparisons of Jesus’ teachings and the messages from The Old Testament.
In chapter 1, the author sets it straight in our mind how Jesus ranks in the spiritual realm. He makes it crystal clear that Jesus is an extension of God. He has authority over all of creation. Yes, that means the angels too. The way I take this is that any message that Jesus brings that is contrary to a message previously relayed by an angel takes authority and precedence over the previous message.
Real life application
That’s all good and well for the Jewish nation practicing the laws and traditions of the Old Testament. But what does that mean in today’s application? The statement that Jesus is above the angels holds two truths that we can practice today.
First, in conversations with those who don’t believe or understand the difference between the old and new covenants, we can ease their minds by telling them that they should focus on Jesus’ teachings as they trump any previous word in the Old Testament. Does this negate what the angels said? Absolutely not. If anything, Jesus’ teachings bring an updated message to the children of God.
Secondly, I want to point out the authority that God mentioned in chapter 1. Bottom line, he says Jesus has an authority that will never fail. His enemies are below his feet. This is encouraging. Jesus says in his teachings that he resides in us and is our strength and our rest. How powerful is that? The singularity that has ultimate authority over all of creation also has our back as long as we believe in him. Say goodbye to your enemies!
