Love Dare Day 24: April 12, 2020
What is Day 24 about:
I have a firm belief that in our current world, we often confuse love for lust. Today’s chapter in The Love Dare confirms my belief.
Love versus Lust.
What do I think about the material:
Most of the time, when we think about lust, we think about the flesh and sexual cravings. I do not want to discount that aspect of lust, but I want to focus on the root of lust.
In this chapter he states that lust is in opposition to love. A sort of enemy of love, but why?
Lust as I see it defined is the selfish satisfaction of a real desire.
Let’s take football for example. Have you ever wondered why the sports industry is so popular? If you are not a sports fan, just hang with me for a minute on this example.
Most of us who watch sports do it from our couch enjoying a snack, instead of engaging in the sport itself. Are we sinning when we do this? I am not qualified to answer that question, but I will say we are potentially robbing ourselves of true enjoyment.
When our favorite team has conquered the league and won the Super Bowl, what are we left with? I know for myself, I begin to think about the next season. I have never gone back through and tried to re-watch the season over again to enjoy the journey.
This is the biggest problem with lust. Regardless of the nature, whether it is sexual or not, lust is a temporary satisfaction of a true desire. This is why lust is such an enemy of love. We are given a temporary reward when engaging in lustful activities without the work.
Love is work and it requires sacrificial and selfless behavior to be long lasting and satisfying. Lust is easy and temporary. We will never satisfy the true urge when engaging in these activities.
Lust is the reason that addictions are so hard to break away from. Drugs, pornography, gambling, or any other addictive behavior is incredibly hard to break away from. It is so easy to get that pleasure we crave.
The chapter closes by saying that God is not denying us of our desire fill the pleasures that he created. God wants us to enjoy those pleasures to its fullest potential. The only way to do that is to seek them through what he provides.
If you have ever had an addiction to something and was able to break away from its bondages, you will know exactly what I am talking about. The temporary satisfaction that lust provides is not only short lived, but so shallow.
My task and how did I perform the task:
Today’s challenge has us to end any obsession that causes us to lust and make a decision today to end it. We must be proactive and decisive with our action. He says we must kill and destroy it.
I do not currently have an aspect of my life that causes me lust, but I have worked on this for many years and I continue to make sure I fight the monster when I see its ugly head peak around the corner.
There was a dark period of my life that I let the enemies of love in my life. It caused more pain than I can mention here. The fight was long, but worth it. Now that the war is over, I fight the little battles as they begin to keep its foothold to a minimum.
