Notional: Existing only in theory or as a suggestion or idea. Existing only in the imagination.
The light looks different here.
My breath reacts the same in the cold.
A notional world for sure, but something feels familiar.
Zipping my coat and shoving my hands in my pocket I crunch through the snow.
The sounds seem a little different too. Not sure how to describe it, but it’s like I hear better.
I know what it is! Like the feel of cold on my nose, the sound of the snow creates a physical reaction.
This notional world creates fear and uncertainty in my chest. The light and sounds feel so harsh, yet welcoming.
I can tell the night will be here soon, but what new discoveries will this night bring. Will the night sounds bring pain or comfort?
I’m a little scared.
I continue crunching the snow.
Fear and anxiety increase in my chest.
This pain hopefully subsides when I leave this notional world.
I stop hoping to relieve any more of this strange world haunting my dreams.
Pinch. Nope, that didn’t work. What if I tried the snow? Nope, now the harsh cold fills my soul.
I’ve got to get out of here. Notional or not, my heart races hoping to find an escape and the fear increases.
As if out of nowhere, I hear a sharp cutting sound through the wind and I turn just in time to see the individual flakes.
I am not sure where it came from, but the snowball to my face shattered this false reality. I lay awake in the dark, soft, warm covers of my bedroom.
Safe.
