Love Dare Day 16: April 2, 2020

What is Day 16 about:

During our first pre-marital session with our pastor, I remember him telling us that it is vital to a marriage for the couple to spend time together in prayer. Even for a Christian couple, this was oddly challenging for Jess and I.

Day 16 of The Love Dare is all about interceding for your significant other.

What do I think about the material:

I find this chapter quite interesting for several reasons, but mostly for the way the author speaks about why we should pray. It is my opinion that the vast majority of reader of this book will be those working on improving our marriage.

As a human being, I find it difficult to work on my marriage without my mind going to all the things that I think Jess could change to help us out as well. This chapter begins by calling us out on this.

The author simply states that if we think there is something that our spouse needs to change then we should pray about it. No amount of work on our part can honestly change a person’s behavior. Only God can change the heart of our spouse, so all we can do is pray.

Another point I want to make about this chapter that might be challenging for its readers is the heart of the prayer. When we intercede for our spouse, our heart must be in the right place. If we want to change our spouse, it must be for the right reasons.

Again as a flawed human, it is hard to eliminate the selfish nature when thinking about others. The great thing is that God honors our prayers. If our intentions align with God’s plan then we will see change in our marriage above and beyond anything we though possible.

What was my task and how did I perform the task:

Prayer. Simply said that is the challenge. As a significant other, we are positioned to be the best at praying about our loved one. We know the light and dark sides of our spouse so our prayer can be right on point.

The task was to incorporate praying for our spouse in our prayer and to be specific with our prayer.

Over the past few months I have finally established a morning routine that includes prayer. Honestly I have always included Jess in my prayers, but now I think I should get more specific.

What was Jessica’s reaction:

No reaction, because I don’t think she knows. I hope the reaction I see will be the changes I am praying for.
