Rest in Your Mind, but not in Your Actions

I am sure you have been there. Going along and doing your best, when that one guy comes in and disrupts it all. Worry not. You only need to rest. I face this issue almost every day of my life. Jess and I because of the nature of our business spend many hours a day in the social media space.

As I am sure most, if not all, are aware, the general public of this world is all too willing to share their opinions with us. Quite often, we don’t know what to do with the negativity that comes with this constant contact. Today, I learned that as children of God, we are not to stress, but to rest.

The three stages of rest

In Second Thessalonians, Paul is writes to a group that is persecuted for their faith. When I say persecuted, I don’t mean shamed on social media, but literally dragged from their homes and beaten to death. So yeah, a little more of a big deal than any affliction an internet troll can throw at us. The letter is only three chapters, but I think it gives us a great formula to follow to help ease the frustration and sorrow that comes with attacks.

First, he says to rest. Be confident that God has your back and he will take care of it. Secondly, he encourages the people by reminding them that no evil will go unrevealed in the end. Lastly, he says that we are to actually feel sorry for those tearing us apart. We know the truth that in the end they will pay for their deeds, so we should warn them of this truth and keep them in our prayers.

That’s all well and good, but how does that look today?

Great question. Since reading this passage, I have pondered the same question and this is what I came up with. First, we should pay for the peace that God promised us. I think it is ok to feel pain when under attack, but take a pause and marinate in that emotion to allow ourselves that natural human reaction, but then ask for peace. Next, feel comfort that it is not your responsibility to deal out justice and punishment. Even though it feels like they are getting away with it, punishment is in their future.

Lastly, and this is the hardest part, we need to move past it and express our condolences. Let’s say for example you post a video on Facebook and you get an ugly comment about your dancing, or how your children are buckled in the car. We can either follow this easy formula or delete the comment. I submit that we use this as an example to the rest of the world on how we are to be Christ-like. Get upset and then ask God for peace. Then, know that God will take care of the situation. Lastly, don’t ignore the comment. Reply back with love. Challenging I know. If you have that situation arise, send me a message. I would love to help you walk through a situation like that.
