What if…

What if I made the world?

You may or may not know, but I dabble a bit in engineering. During my stint at UI, I almost completed a Civil Engineering degree. Often times I wonder, What if I made the world? How would it be different, if at all? In my limited human mind, I think first of all, I would create a universe that was full of cause and effect. Yes, much like our world now, but maybe a little more understandable.

It would be fun that at birth, you are handed a manual that outlines all the reactions to any of your future actions. Sure, it would be a large book, but we would make sure that there is a digital and audio copy. School is all about learning that book. No one will have the same book because everyone has different causes throughout their life. What is that? You say that takes away free will. Don’t worry, I think if I made the world, I would also make the rules.

What if I made all the rules?

I hate rules. I once managed an inventory of parts on a manufacturing floor. This inventory kept becoming unbalanced due to assemblers helping themselves to parts. Did they need the parts? Yes. However, every month my boss got an ear full when the balance couldn’t be resolved. His solution: Rules. I first went along with the idea, I was only 6 months on the job, but it didn’t take long for me to get the courage to voice my opinion. After another quarter of inventory, losses went by and I suggested we teach the assemblers, not give them more rules.

No surprise, it worked. Not only did we fix our balance issues, but I even recruited a few assemblers to help train others on the new processes. That is how I feel about rules. With proper training and incentives, rules don’t need to exist. I hear you. What about the bad people on the newly formed planet. It would be nice if everyone studied the cause-and-effect principles they will learn in school, but if there is free will, then there will be bad people. Enter my next phase.

What if I cast the judgement?

This is the easiest part. Well, maybe the next part is the easiest, but regardless, judgment will not be as convoluted as our legal system today. Please don’t get me started. I thought I lost all faith in our medical industry, but our legal system has made our judicial branch look like the top of the class. I digress. Remember that little book I talked about in the beginning? Well, we would simply see what effect came from the cause and we will know the person made the poor choice. Naive you say? Hush, this is my blog.

What if I carry out the punishement?

Therapy, not jails.

What if…

Simple and sweet. Right?

Sadly, we can’t operate like that.
